Mangaladevi Kshatriya Cheramar Sabha

ABOUT Mangaladevi Kshatriya Cheramar Sabha

Sri Mangaladevi Amma, in the context of the Mangaladevi Kshatriya Cheramar Sabha (MKCS), is revered as the divine form of Kannagi, the legendary heroine of the Tamil epic Silappathikaram.

For the MKCS and the broader Cheramar community, this deity represents not just a spiritual figure but a powerful symbol of their ancestral heritage and royal lineage.

Key Historical & Cultural Significance

The Deity (Kannagi)

The community worships Mangaladevi Amma as the deified form of Kannagi. According to legend, after burning the city of Madurai in her righteous rage, Kannagi entered the Chera kingdom. She ascended to heaven from a spot where the Mangaladevi Temple now stands, located within the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border (Idukki district).

Ancestral Lineage

The “Kshatriya Cheramar” designation in the Sabha’s name reflects the community’s belief that they are descendants of the ancient Chera Kings, specifically King Cheran Chenguttuvan. It is believed that King Chenguttuvan built the original temple for Kannagi around 2,000 years ago to honor her chastity and power.

Role of the Sabha

The Mangaladevi Kshatriya Cheramar Sabha serves as a socio-religious organization dedicated to:

  • Preserving the rights of the Cheramar community to worship at the ancient Mangaladevi temple.
  • Asserting their historical identity as the original custodians of the temple and descendants of the Chera dynasty.
  • Organizing community participation during the Chitra Pournami festival, the only day of the year when the temple is open to the public.

The Mangaladevi Temple

The focus of the Sabha’s devotion is the ancient stone temple located at an altitude of 1,337 meters. It is a site of immense historical importance, showcasing distinct Kerala-style architecture (using massive granite stones). Due to its location in a protected tiger reserve, access is highly restricted, making the annual pilgrimage organized by groups like the MKCS a vital event for maintaining their cultural continuity.
